Thomsen's Corner Bar has been a cornerstone of Osmond, Nebraska, for over a century — proudly owned and operated by the Thomsen family since 1922. Located at the corner of State and Third Street, the building was originally constructed in 1904 by the Sioux City Brewing Company and began its life as a pool hall in 1903.
It all started when Hans Thomsen, a German immigrant, leased the pool hall from the Sioux City Brewing Company in 1922. Hans later sold half of his interest to Henry Grosserhode and the rest to Thea Albertson and Joan Mlady in 1924, but he repurchased it in 1925, becoming the sole owner. In 1927, Hans bought the building outright, added a soda fountain, and renamed it Thomsen’s Pool Hall. During Prohibition, the bar served root beer and near beer until liquor by the drink was legalized in 1934, at which point the soda fountain was removed.
Hans’s sons, Henry and Louie, both worked alongside him. Louie left to serve in the army in 1943, and Hans was helped by Henry Thomsen, Otis Gore, and Leroy Steffen to keep the business running. After returning from World War II, Louie purchased the pool hall from his father in 1946 and renamed it Thomsen’s Corner. Over the years, Louie made several improvements, including adding a glass bar, a fireplace, and a beer garden — though the tavern still features the original oak and mirrored back bar.
In 1962, Louie’s son Jerry started working full-time at the bar. In 1975, Jerry bought the business from Louie and ran it with his wife Karla and their partners, Michael Alexander and his wife Jill. Jerry eventually became the sole owner, with Louie remaining active in the business until his death in 1988.
Thomsen’s Corner has endured through the decades as a gathering place for locals and visitors alike. In 2019, after devastating floods hit northeast Nebraska, the bar underwent a thoughtful renovation. While the interior and exterior received modern updates — including some of the nicest restrooms in the state — the original charm and welcoming atmosphere were carefully preserved.
Today, Thomsen's Corner remains a popular spot for celebrations, alumni reunions, pool leagues, and live music. It’s more than just a bar — it’s a piece of Nebraska history and a symbol of community resilience. Whether you're stopping by for a drink, live music, or just good company, Cory, Ryan, Shanon, Jesse, John, and the rest of the team are ready to welcome you. Thomsen's Corner Bar has been part of the Thomsen family for over 100 years. Located at the corner of State and Third Street in Osmond, Nebraska, the building was originally constructed in 1904 by the Sioux City Brewing Company and began operating as a pool hall in 1903.
In 1922, Hans Thomsen, a German immigrant, leased the building from Sioux City Brewing Company and opened Thomsen’s Pool Hall, serving snacks, root beer, and "cordials" during the Prohibition era. Hans sold half of his interest to Henry Grosserhode and then sold the rest to Thea Albertson and Joan Mlady in 1924. However, in 1925, Hans repurchased the pool hall, becoming the sole owner.
Two years later, in 1927, Hans bought the building from Sioux City Brewing Company and added a soda fountain, renaming the business Thomsen’s Pool Hall.
During Prohibition, the bar served root beer and near beer. In 1934, after liquor by the drink was legalized, the soda fountain was removed. Henry Thomsen worked for his father Hans until 1931, when another son, Louis (Louie), joined the business. Louie left to serve in the army in 1943. While he was away, Hans was helped by Henry Thomsen, Otis Gore, and Leroy Steffen to keep the business running.
After Louie’s discharge from the army, he purchased the pool hall from his father in 1946 and renamed it Thomsen’s Corner. Over the next 20 years, Louie made several improvements, including adding a glass bar, a fireplace, and a beer garden. The tavern still features the original oak and mirrored back bar.
In 1962, Louie’s son Jerry began working full-time at the bar. In 1975, Jerry purchased the business from Louie. Jerry and his wife Karla, along with Michael Alexander and his wife Jill Alexander (Jerry’s sister), became co-owners after Louie Thomsen passed the business down. Eventually, Jerry bought out his partners and became the sole owner. Louie remained active in the business until his death in 1988.
Jerry Thomsen remained the owner until his nephews and partners purchased the bar outright, in 2019. This made Thomsen's Corner a fourth-generation family-owned business, now owned by Michael Alexander’s sons — Cory Alexander, Ryan Alexander, and Shanon Alexander — along with their cousin Jesse Alexander and family friend John Kirsch.
In 2019, after devastating floods hit northeast Nebraska, the bar underwent a thoughtful renovation. While the interior and exterior received modern updates — including some of the nicest restrooms in the state — the original charm and welcoming atmosphere were carefully preserved.
Thomsen’s Corner continues to be a popular spot for celebrations, alumni reunions, pool leagues, and entertainment. Its long-standing history and welcoming atmosphere have made it a cornerstone of the Osmond community.
Today, Thomsen's Corner remains a gathering place for Osmond, Plainview, and surrounding towns. Whether you're stopping by for a drink, live music, or just good company, Cory, Ryan, Shanon, Jesse, John, and the rest of the team are ready to welcome you.
